GEORGETOWN, Texas — The Grace Academy Griffins turned their home field into a house of horrors for the visiting NYOS Jaguars on Thursday night, hanging a program-record 82 points in an 82-0 demolition that ended with a continuous clock before halftime.
In a performance that bordered on the surreal, the Griffins needed only 12 offensive snaps to score 82 points — an average of nearly 7 points per play — while the defense and special teams contributed six touchdowns of their own, including five pick-sixes and a safety.
Freshman defensive back Nathan Washington was the nightmare fuel for the Jaguars, intercepting four passes and returning three of them for touchdowns (20, 43, and 25 yards) while adding a 40-yard scoring run on his lone offensive touch.
Freshman Spencer Smith opened and closed the scoring with rushing touchdowns and added a 50-yard interception return for six. Freshman quarterback Bridger Maxwell barely broke a sweat, attempting just two passes (completing one for 36 yards and a touchdown to Samuel Moore) and scoring twice on the ground.
By the time the second quarter ended, Grace had already scored 82 points. The Griffin defense was merciless, holding NYOS to 12 total yards, one first down, and five interceptions on 21 pass attempts. The Jaguars crossed midfield exactly zero times.
Historic Numbers
Final score: Grace Academy 82, NYOS 0 (mercy rule invoked early second quarter)
Offensive touchdowns: 6
Defensive/special teams touchdowns: 6 (5 INT returns, 1 safety)
Total offensive plays: 12 (10.3 yards per play)
Total turnovers forced: 5 (all interceptions)
Points in first quarter: 40
Points in second quarter: 42
With the victory, the Griffins improve to 2-1 on the season and — thanks to tiebreakers and the sheer dominance of their district opener — sit alone in first place in TAIAO Division III South. Head Coach Brent Golemon emptied the bench early and still watched his reserves tack on points in bunches. “This one was about our youmg players showing that they are ready to compete,” Golemon said afterward. “We’ve got a lot of young talent, but nights like tonight happen when everybody does their job selflessly.”
Next week brings a much stiffer test, but after an 82-point statement at home, the message to the rest of the division is clear: the Griffins are here, and they’re not planning on giving up that top spot anytime soon.
Final: Grace Academy Griffins 82, NYOS Jaguars 0
