Grace secures second win of inaugural season

Grace Academy squared off against the New Braunfels Thunder in a non-district mathup pitting two young teams in their first seasons of play. Both teams had 10 players and were working through the first pains of an inagural season. The Thunder came into the season winless and the Griffins had a single win against San Antonio East in week four.

The Griffins jumped out to a 24 - 13 halftime lead having won the turnover battle in the first half with one more takeaway and making all their two point extra points while the Thunder had to settle for 1 point on extra points in the first half.

The extra points would end up being the difference in the game as both teams scored four TDs with the Thunder equalizing the turnover battle in the second half and scoring two touchdowns to the Griffins lone score early in the third quarter. Grace managed to make all four trys which gave them 8 points while the Thunder were only able to generate one point.

The Griffins were stronger on the ground amassing over 200 yards rushing with Andrew Martin leading the team with 131 yards on 12 carries and 1 TD. Caleb McGahey also managed 95 yards passing and two TDs to help the Griffins top 300 yards of total offense for the second time this season.

Defensively, the Griffins held the Thunder to under 100 yards rushing with several fourth down stops. McGahey led the team in tackles with 11 tackles, a caused fumble and 2 fumble recoveries. Martin added 8 more tackes and Maxwell 4 stops with a key interception in the end zone to stop an Thunder drive in the 4th quarter.

The Griffins moved to 2-6 on the season (1-2 in district) and resume district play next week facing St. Mary's.
