Griffins get their first win of the inaugural season

The Griffins had been slated to play Leander Sterling Classical to open their district schedule but at the last minute Sterling shut the doors on their season and Grace was left without a game. However, San Antonio Town East had a similar situation and the teams were able to make it happen for the fans.

The Griffins entered the contest 0-3 while the Eagles were 0-1. Both teams were looking for a win and the game proved to be a hard fought contest with Grace Academy coming out on top by the score of 38-28.

The first half belonged to the Eagles as they led at halftime by the score of 20 -16 having capitalized on a Grace turnover and adding an additional two passing TDs in the first half. However, the Griffins only allowed 8 points in the second half and that was with less than a minute to play in the game.

The staunch second half defense was led by McGahey (8 Tackles) and Maxwell (6 tackles) as the Griffins held the Eagles to 74 yards rushing on the night. Hoyt (3 TFL) and Martin both had 5 tackles each as the Grifffins were excellent on 4th down and stopping Town East on all seven of their fourth down attempts.

The offense struggled at times but managed 287 total yards with 207 on the ground. McGahey had 97 yards and 3 TD (one runnning and two passing) while Maxwell contributed 83 yards and Martin 66 and one TD.

Grace had a negative 45 yards rushing due to poor execution; however, the Griffins only turned the ball over once and had a single penalty on the night. Furthermore, the Griffins were excellent on special teams recovering two onside kicks and making 4 of their 5 two point conversions.

Grace will need to clean up their game if they intend to compete against highly ranked Centex Chargers next week. The Chargers enter the game 2-1 and ranked #135 while the Griffins will be hoping their recent win will lift them to close to #200.
