I was chatting with another coach and we were discussing a variation of theological topics along with our current culture's insistant disregard for the tenets of the bible. Our culture appears to obey the Bible only when it suits their lifestyle and to dismiss many of its counter cultural teachings.
During the course of our discussion we touched on marriage, the ever increasing variations of Chrisitian denominations and pride which we both agreed is one of the most difficult sins for many men (and the young men we coach).
Coach jokingly said it has gotten so bad that our culture even has a month-long celebration of pride. If only our cultural sins could only be limited to a month each year!
As Christians, we are to blame for letting the devil work unabated in our culture. We are placing the stones into the Tower of Babel when we elevate all forms and manner of sin. We should correct those who mistake tolerance for love as true love is the desire to see our neighbor embrace Jesus Christ as their savior.
The fear of the Lord is to hate evil; pride and arrogance Proverbs 8:13
God's not a fan of pride, apparently grouping it with some pretty nasty company.
As a football coach, I see pride expressed in many forms and it often accelerates with success. The more teams have success the more each athlete is tempted to elevate his contribution to the team’s achievements. The more a team becomes a collection of individuals seeking their own accolades the quicker the downfall.
The Bible teaches us that humility is the antidote to pride. What could be more humble than the Creator taking the form of man, suffering and dying to pay for our sins? Jesus is the answer to pride. Maybe with more Jesus in our lives we could eradicate months celebrating pride in exchange for a year of humility?
