Bastrop Tribe Consolidated suffered a rare loss — only its third in the past three seasons — against public school Calvert 32-28 at Allen Academy in Bryan on Saturday.

Calvert (2-1) scored the winning touchdown on a 56-yard run in the final minute of the contest.

Tribe (1-1) had scored the first 20 points of the fourth quarter to grab a 28-26 advantage.

The Warriors’ Nathaniel Heilig opened the scoring with a 17-yard field goal. Samuel Osborn followed with a 53-yard scoring strike to 6-foot-5 sophomore Hansen Collie. Osborn then tossed a 40-yard touchdown to Heilig for the go-ahead score.

“It was a hard-fought battle with both teams bogging down in the first half and each scoring only once,” Tribe coach Brent Golemon said in an email. “In the end, (Calvert was) the more physical team. When we went up by two with 45 seconds left, they made the plays needed to win.”

Despite the loss, Tribe moved up two spots to No. 14 among all six-man teams in Texas. Calvert improved four spots to No. 8.

Osborn gained 202 yards on 32 carries but scored only one touchdown, from 10 yards in the second quarter.

“Osborn had to earn all of his yards as it was tough sledding against the speed of Calvert on defense,” Golemon said.

Osborn also completed 7-of-13 passes for 139 yards for two touchdowns. He suffered one interception.

Travis Guy led the defense with seven solo tackles and one assisted tackle. Lake Mills added six solo tackles and one assisted tackle.

Golemon said he was impressed with the seven sophomores and one freshman “who played meaningful reps as many of our older players were unable to stay in the game due to fatigue or injury.”

Golemon said Mills departed in the first quarter and Chandler Golemon left in the third because of injuries.

The game was switched from Calvert to Allen Academy because of a wet field.

“I agreed to make a fast team faster by playing them on turf,” Golemon said. “Maybe I should have agreed to a mud game.”

Tribe visits Northside Sports Association (1-0) at Conroe on Friday.
